Friends of the Harbour,
The Little Harbour Community Centre (LHCC) has emerged from COVID as a busy hub for numerous community events. In the past year we have hosted weddings, birthdays, trivia nights, day camps, pickleball clinics, pub nights, a yard sale, a Spring brunch, seniors’ luncheons, kids’ events, an Open House, Christmas Dinner, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter festivities, as well as celebrated lives of our community members.
In addition to continuing our regular events, we have developed some ambitious plans for the immediate future including:
- Completing a feasibility study to establish a trail system on the 16 acres of community property that surround the current center,
- Hiring summer students to run a children’s summer camp, and
- Completing some much-needed building renovations and improvements.
A Building Advisory Team, comprised of local volunteers with engineering and business backgrounds, has assessed our current needs. Our fifty-year-old community centre requires repairs to the exterior doors, additional insulation throughout and upgraded heating and electrical systems. The Building Advisory Team has estimated these improvements will cost over $75,000 and although we are applying for various grants to help offset a portion of these costs, we also require financial support from the community. (A full report is available if you would like to preview).
Also, you may already have heard that the LHCC has recently been chosen as the Comfort Centre for Little Harbour and surrounding communities served by the Little Harbour Fire Department. To prepare ourselves for a declared emergency, an Emergency Management Team has been created. While financial support from the province and municipality grants will cover the majority of costs, our share for the purchase and installation of a propane generator and fuel tank will be $3,000. Therefore, the total costs of improvements to our centre are estimated to be over $78,000.
While we are continually planning fundraising events, we are also asking you, our community, for financial help as we invest in your Community Centre.
